Midtown Direct Rep (MDR*) celebrates the uniquely large amount of Broadway theatre professionals living in the Maplewood/South Orange community, by working with these highly accomplished artists to develop and present theatre - both new works and old favorites - relevant to our community. MDR is devoted to sharing the talent of our neighbors with our neighbors.

    Join Midtown Direct Rep in developing new and innovative American theatre.

    Following on the heels of MDR's successful development of Rated P (for parenthood), MDR's new program, Theatre in the Loft, aims to do the same for other previously unseen material.
    MDR will now be presenting monthly readings or workshops of new plays and musicals one Sunday night a month at 7 PM in the SOPAC loft. With a cash bar and post show discussions with our casts and creative teams, MDR will foster a fun and collaborative environment to nurture the development of top notch theatre right here at home.

    The series kicks off on Sunday, November 11th with BY AND BY, by Lauren Grunderson.

    From the playwright: Steven has always protected his daughter from the world, until the world bursts in with the truth of her extraordinary creation through genetic manipulation. Now he's forced to defend his past, her future, and the memory of his lost love. An intimate, theatrical story of loss, survival, forgiveness, and the coming reality of our biotechnical world.

    With book and lyrics by Midtown Direct Rep's Co-Artistic Director, Sandy Rustin, direction by MDR's Co-Artistic Director, Jeremy Dobrish, Musical Direction by MDR's Musical Director, Meg Zervoulis, and starring MDR members David Josefsberg & Joanna Young, Rated P for Parenthood chronicles every stage of modern-day parenting, from conception to college, with giant doses of heart and humor. A versatile cast of four takes the audience through the ups and downs of childrearing – from the sublime to the ridiculous – in a series of comic and musical vignettes in under 90 minutes. A hilarious, fresh, and decidedly irreverent look at an age old topic, Rated P provides all the wistful joy of childrearing …at a fraction of the cost of braces! * Founded in June 2010, Midtown Direct Rep is a 57-member (and growing) repertory theater company in residence at the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC).
